Tired of the "Animal House" bad-boy reputation they said unjustly stigmatizes good fraternities, they've kicked off their shoes and dug in their heels in for a good, long fight. They don't care if their arms hurt or if they're drenched in sweat or pouring rain, but they are set on settling the score -- on a beach volleyball court...
L.J. Cagle, the fraternity's 20-year-old president, played 13 consecutive hours of volleyball during his freshman year. "We'd try to hit the windows and wake people up," Cagle said, pointing to the two houses that make up the ATO residences on the outer edge of Greek Row. A mini-beach volleyball court in the front yard distinguishes it from the stately manors that line the historic street. "Regular volleyball gets boring after 72 hours."...

Two stone lions, which used to guard the front entrance of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house, were part of the remains pulled out by fraternity members on Tuesday...
The house at 1410 College St. was purchased by the SAE housing corporation from the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity in 1975 when that organization left campus. It is estimated to be at least 100 years old, said Kevin Brooks, president of the housing corporation and an alumni adviser of SAE.

Columbia architect Bob Cunningham is drawing a blueprint for a fraternity house in Mississippi. In the past 20 years, his company has designed 60 to 70 Greek houses. This one belongs to Alpha Tau Omega and might be the most famous. In August 2004, fire destroyed the original house at the University of Mississippi [web/tickets] and claimed the lives of three students, ages 19 to 20.
"There is nothing sadder than losing a child," Cunningham said. The architect said tragedies like that are the reason he strongly recommends installing fire sprinklers "in every fraternity and sorority house, regardless of regulations."...

Before he ever set foot on Indiana Umiversity's campus, 13-year-old Hans Arnesen was on his way to becoming a Little 500 rider. At the time, nobody knew how successful he would become -- he was a first-time rider who was about to set out on the first of many cross-country bike trips...
Each summer, from the time he was 13 years old to the time he was 17, Arnesen traveled the country with the Bloomington-based cycling program called Decycles. The program is headed by Alpha Tau Omega's coach Norm Houze, a friend of the Minnesota-based Arnesen family...

The national organization became concerned about the disheveled condition of the house, including numerous cigarette burns in the carpeting, said Wynn Smiley, ATO chief executive officer. Last month, pictures were brought to the attention of the national organization showing members engaging in activity that could create a liability, he said. He declined to describe the activity. "We decided to act before things got worse," Smiley said.
